BACKGROUND: The physico-chemical characteristics of a new banana triploid hybrid (FLHORBAN 920 cultivar, AAA group), partially resistant to Yellow Sigatoka and Black Leaf Streak diseases, were measured throughout ripening and compared with those ofthe Cavendish banana.RESULTS: The greatest differences between FLHORBAN 920 (F920) and the Cavendish variety were observed at intermediate maturity, when bananas were yellow with green tips or yellow. The F920 bananas have more dry matter and starch thanthose of Cavendish. The total polyphenol contents of F920 bananas were three-fold higher than Cavendish. The sucrose contents were 1.5-fold higher in F920 fruits, whereas glucose and fructose contents were two-fold higher in Cavendish fruits. The F920 fruits had fewer esters, carbonyls and phenolic ethers than Cavendish. The two varieties differed in the composition in methyl-branched (alcohols and esters) and phenolic ether volatile compounds.CONCLUSION: These characteristics, coupled with resistanceto the principal banana diseases, suggest that the F920 variety should be developed further. The data on physico-chemical and organoleptic characteristics of baby corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes were recorded for five genotypes viz. SE 539, SE 547, CM 139, CM 140 and PMH 2 along with check, (Parkash) during kharif 2006. Significant mean differences were observed among genotypes for most of the characters studied. CM 140 was the best on the basis of overall acceptability as it showed highest score (16.30) on the basis of 25 point score. PMH 2 exhibited better physical characters like ear weight, ear length, ear diameter than other four genotypes and hybrid Parkash. Moisture and total sugars were on a par with that of Parkash. Phosphorus was also recorded higher than Parkash in PMH 2. This study suggested that baby corn of PMH 2 was better than Parkash followed by SE 539 and CM 140.

Arkavathi, a tributary of Cauvery, is facing a threat from urbanisation and industrialization from the last few decades. The Physico-chemical parameters for both Harobele and Byrmangala command areas coming in Arkavathi river were analysed to investigate the suitability of the groundwater for drinking and agricultural practices. The groundwater samples were collected from bore wells in 5 villages each in both command areas, located within 5 km buffer on either sides of the Arkavathi River in Harobeleand Byrmangala command areas. The parameters such as pH, EC, Turbidity, TDS, Chloride, Magnesium, Fluoride, Nitrate, Boron, Sulphate, Phosphate in both areas were found within the permissible limit. The Phosphate concentrations in Byrmangala groundwaterwere negligible when compared to Harobele groundwater. The mean Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR) of both the reservoir was falling under excellent category (0-10) as per standard classification which represents that the samples are suitable for agriculturalpurposes. Samples are falling under a good category (<1.25) in case of Residual Sodium Carbonate. The samples analysed for Sodium concentration found within good to an excellent category in both Byrmangala and Harobele command area. This indicates thatgroundwater samples were suitable for agriculture purposes. The discharge of partially treated water is not yet polluting groundwater of the peri-urban region of Bangalore. However, sewage could be treated before discharging to these reservoirs to keep groundwater in good condition for the future generations.

Keeping in view status evaluation as the comer stone of environmental management, present investigation has been aimed at study the present status of the phytoplankton dynamics, which constitute the main fraction of food of the aquatic fauna, of Chhinda dam water at Simdega, Jharkhand. Seasonal fluctuation, percentage composition and yearly averages were computed taking monthly observation data from June, 2008 to May, 2010 in relation to abiotic spectrum of the dam water. Simple correlation as well as multiple correlation analysis was computed .Coefficient of determination (R2) in the present investigation was computed as 0.948 which indicated that 94.8 % fluctuation in phytoplankton standing crop of the dam was dependent on the physico-chemical regime of the dam water considered for the present investigation and 5.2% to other factors which were not taken into account in the investigation understudy.

Annual survey of Jaltnahal, Amer, Nevta and Ramgarh lakes, has been conducted for one calendar year, to determine physico-chemical characteristics of water and the levels of zinc (heavy metal) and endosulfan (an organochlorine pesticide). These lakes are situated on the outskirts of Jaipur city Changes in pollutants correlated well with the physico-chemical characteristics of water bodies. Results reveal that the levels of endosulfan and zinc are highest in Jalmahal lake (1.324 and 0.197 mg l~(-1) respectively) and lowest in Ramgarh lake (0.020 and 0.120 mg l~(-1) respectively). Anthropogenic sources and cultivation in the dried up area of these lakes seem to contribute largely to pollution.

Various types of soil samples wars collected from the 4 different site [National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Tanda, Ambedkar Nagar, Mahadeve Brick Factory (MBF), Vadahi Nagar dumping site (VND) and Airport (NPS), Faizabad ], for the determination of different physico-chemieal characteristics of soil, in present observation, pH was recordrd as 22 % higher than NPS followed by MBF, and VND. The temperature was recorded as 27 % (VND), 6 % (NTPC) and 5% (MBF) than NPS. The bulk density was 24 % higher than NPS followed by MBF and VND. The water holding capacity was more at NTPC followed by MBF, VND and NPS. The organic matter Was more at VND followed by NPS, MBF and NTPC. The organic corbon was 62 % more at VNP than NFS fo-tlowed by MBF and NTPC. The higher moisture content was recorded at VND followed by NPS, NTPC, and MBF. The peosphorous was more at VND (40 %) foUowed by MBF, NfPC-and NPS: The highest nitrogen was recorded at VND followed by M3F, NPS and NTPC. The concentration of potassium was less at NTPC followed by MBF, VND than NPS. The C/N ratio was more at NT PC and less at VND (16%) and MBF (11 %) than NPS. The highest exchangeable mcgnesium was found to be at NTPC (96 %) followed by MBF (87 %), VND (65 %) and NPS. The highest exchangeable calcium was found to beat NTPC (45%) followed by MBF, VND and NPS. Result reveled that soil of NTPC was found to be more polluted. A proper management of dumping of f lyash an i municipal wastes on the soil are urgently required, for the improvement of the soil around the Faizabad so that more production of local crops would be achieved.
